A Scottish respondent has lost lynnerussell.com in a domain dispute to the ex-CNN anchor-woman of the same name, after the panel held that using the associated web site to publish a love poem to a "girl named Lynne Russell who [the respondent] knew in his 'younger days'" was not sufficient evidence that it had been registered in good faith.

VeriSign this past weekend transferred operation of the .org top-level domain to the Public Interest Registry (PIR), a group established by the nonprofit Internet Society (ISOC) to administer .org. The technical transfer follows PIR's official assumption of authority over .org earlier this month.

Con la sentenza del 26 febbraio 2002 del tribunale di Napoli, il nome a dominio è stato ufficialmente ricompreso tra i segni distintivi atipici e quindi nella famiglia dei diritti di proprietà intellettuale; esso potrà beneficiare dunque della protezione ex art. 2958 c.c. in materia di concorrenza sleale.
Si superano quindi le teorie "astruse e bizzarre" che vedevano nel domain name un mero numero telefonico privo di qualsiasi capacità distintiva e utilità commerciale o promozionale, sancendo quindi quello che in dottrina e in giurisprudenza anche internazionale è ormai un acquis incontestato.

Un passaggio di dominio "con classe" quello avvenuto tra lo smanettone olandese Steven Bink e Microsoft. Il primo aveva infatti registrato più di due anni fa il dominio windowsxp.nu, che Microsoft ha reclamato in quanto rispondente al proprio trademark. Ma la battaglia legale è stata evitata.

Il 16 dicembre 2002, il CNNIC (China Internet Network Information Centre) ha pubblicato le nuove norme per la registrazione dei nomi di dominio ".cn". Le nuove regole, che prevedono la semplificazione dell'intera disciplina relativa alla registrazione dei nomi di dominio, erano attese da tempo.

Tra i nomi di dominio, le nuove estensioni settoriali faticano decisamente a prendere piede, rispetto agli “storici” .com, .org, .net e a tutte le estensioni nazionali. Alle difficoltà di diffusione, vanno poi aggiunti sistemi di attribuzione abbastanza dubbi.

Cambio della guardia all'Istituto di informatica e telematica del CNR (IIT, prima si chiamava IAT, Istituto per le applicazioni tecnologiche), l'ente di registrazione dei nomi a dominio ".it". Il professor Franco Denoth si e' dimesso ed e' stato nominato direttore pro tempore l'ingegner Stefano Trumpy, figura ben nota e stimata nel mondo dell'internet italiana. La nomina di Trumpy non e' definitiva perche' la direzione degli istituti di ricerca del CNR viene assegnata per concorso.

Dopo l'annuncio di Verisign riguardo l'implementazione delle funzionalità di IDN (Internationalized Domain Names) Icann ha richiesto il parere dell'Internet Architecture Board per verificare l'impatto di queste modifiche sui Domain Name Servers dei .COM e .NET.
